The Wirksworth Transition Community Land Trust was registered by the Charities Commission as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation number 1178158 in May 2018. It was initiated by the Wirksworth Transition Energy & Housing Group, at a well-attended public meeting in July 2016, and enables communities to build genuinely local rented housing for local residents. Legislation passed in 2008  brought in this new power. It will be accountable to a membership which costs only a one-off £1 to join.

The Trust will give Wirksworth and Middleton by Wirksworth a means to acquire land and hold community ownership of affordable homes for local people who may not be able to buy property outright. It will build homes which cannot be bought by speculators and will be offered at lower social housing rental rates. In addition the homes will be to PassivHaus standards, meaning very low energy bills.

The steering group has support from Wirksworth Town Council, Derbyshire Dales District Council and has been working closely with Derbyshire Dales Council for Voluntary Service and the National CLT Network.

The group is seeking building land in the area and would be keen to hear from anyone who is able to suggest a site. Local people who would be interested in becoming involved with the Trust, especially those who have skills to offer or are waiting for affordable housing, would be most welcome to join and can contact Peter Walton on 01629 825112.
