WTCAG aims to help Wirksworth’s unique town centre to thrive. It was established in 2015 in response to the closure of the post office and the imminent closures of Natwest and Lloyds banks.
In August 2016, we achieved the re-establishment of a Post Office for the town. It was not possible to find premises in the town centre that satisfied the new regulations of Post Office Ltd but we helped to get an excellent post office at Mountford Stores which opened in August 2016. It is a short walk from the town centre, the Little Sixes bus goes right past the site and the Derby bus stops on Derby Road nearby. Neither Post Office Ltd not Wirksworth Town Council would sign-post Mountford Stores, so, in 2017, we installed a ‘Post Office’ direction sign visible from Derby Road.
Also in 2016, we produced an Accessibility survey and guidance sheet for traders.
We have since been preparing a town centre parking policy, addressing the social and economic implications of parking provision for Wirksworth, in response to the discovery that Derbyshire Dales District Council does not have such a policy. The availability and cost of parking is a critical issue for town centre traders. In March 2018, Wirksworth Town Council agreed to support the policy and work towards its implementation.
