The Archaeological Society undertakes small fieldwork examinations of the town and its immediate area with the aim of increasing our understanding of the history and development of Wirksworth over time. This long-running effort has contributed to the very extensive re-appraisal of Wirksworth’s history, resulting in the publication of a book by Anton Shone and Mary Wiltshire called “Wirksworth: A History”. The Society has had the considerable help and interest of local people with sites to dig in gardens and fields and useful information such as old documents which many people have around their homes.
