35 Saint John's Street, Wirksworth, DE4 4DS

In December 2016 it was confirmed that Wirksworth Heritage Centre has received a  grant of £1,338,900 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to transform their three storey premises at 31 St John’s Street into a new heritage centre which will preserve, promote and make accessible the stories of Wirksworth and its people.

The centre aims to be a new focus for Wirksworth offering an enjoyable and rewarding visitor experience, and delivering a programme of entertaining events and educational activities for local people, schools and visitors to the town.

The project commenced in March 2017 with the renovation, conversion and fitting out of the building expected to start early summer 2017. The space created will facilitate a new interpretation of the town’s heritage through creative use of the organisation’s museum collection and the premises will offer a diverse programme of events and activities to bring that heritage alive. Ongoing financial support to the operations will be provided by a café and retail shop.

The building, part of which dates from the 17th century, was bequeathed to the organisation by Mrs Webster in 2014.

You can visit the Heritage Centre’s shop at the corner of Coldwell Street/ North End every Friday and Saturday between 10:30am-4pm.  As well as having a chance to discuss project progress and find out how you could get involved, you can also pick up a variety of tourist information leaflets and there is a range of locally themed gifts and products in the shop – the sale of which helps to support the project.
